The Demise of Opinion

Opinion is the quietest of human freedoms, and the first to disappear. Long before a censor silences a press or a mob cancels a name, something more intimate collapses: the ordinary confidence that one may be wrong out loud, in front of others, without forfeiting one's place among them.
The Demise of Opinion follows that freedom from its origins in the dialogical exchange between speakers who trust each other enough to disagree, through the print revolution that first made a plurality of belief survivable, to the mass-media age in which opinion could be manufactured as readily as it was expressed. It traces how ideology grounds belief, how the public conversation is set and shaped, and how the very tools that built the modern public sphere have learned to unbuild it.
The final chapters descend into the record itself: the blasphemy statutes that still carry the death penalty in eight countries; the total states - Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union, North Korea, China, Cuba - that made the mere holding of a view a capital matter; and, closer to home, the newer and quieter mechanism by which opinion now dies in societies that never passed a law against it at all - a lost job, a canceled lecture, a doxxing campaign, an arrest for a tweet. Two histories, one grammar: wherever a person may no longer safely be wrong, opinion - fallible, plural, correctable by definition - has already ceased to exist in anything but name.
Written across several years and drawing on phenomenology, the sociology of knowledge, and a consensualist theory of truth built out of and beyond Habermas, this is a philosophical argument pursued with a historian's appetite for the concrete case. It asks a single question with an urgency that will only grow: what, exactly, are we prepared to do to keep the space in which we may be wrong from closing any further?
