I have recently read this book for the first time. Although written the previous decade the relevance of this book has grown not shrunk. Sociology continues to shrink and splinter in line with Horowitz's analysis and its popularity as an undergraduate subject declines. Unfortunately, similar problems are also ailing related fields such as social work particularly in the UK and also threaten related fields such as Psychology. Although many (sensible) people will already agree with Horowitz's views what this book does is to give people the intellectual weapons to create a denfense for a more objective and scientific approach to the study of social life. Perhaps this book could have a follow up which looks at the contributuions which can be made by science and moral philosophy to crtiquing current sociological thinking and developing alternatives. This book is a courageous work and an exciting read. Buy it!!!!!!!!!!!
