The Death of Freedom describes how personal liberty has been eroded and undermined by successive Labour and Conservative governments over the last fifty years. Personal choices that were once a private matter are subject to increasing government meddling. We are now prohibited from smoking in public, driving without wearing a seat belt, and riding a motorcycle without a crash helmet. Liberties that we used to take for granted, like the freedom of protest and the right to trial by jury, have been trampled on and watered down. We have also seen the proliferation of surveillance systems, the growth of DNA databases, the watering down of habeas corpus, prohibitions against "hate speech," attempts to introduce identity cards, as well as the introduction of many intrusive and humiliating security procedures at airports and at ferry terminals.
