This book examines the forces converging on community colleges today. These forces have made those of us who have worked in these boiling educational cauldrons tremble. Nevertheless, from these dark forces we must extract a reasonable future. The outlook is not good. Underfunded from the start, split in their intentions between being a remedial step up to "real" college for the underprepared and being a trade school for entry-level jobs, threatened with declining high school graduations, shaken with financial instability with salaries and administrator numbers always expanding faster than enrollment, and cursed as a path to the middle class by the sudden demise of that manufacturing-based economic level of existence. Community colleges are threatened with cutbacks, closings, and mergers.
