The Davies Caeadda Family: A Welsh farming dynasty: 1700-1966

By Antony David Davies

The Davies Caeadda Family

A Welsh Farming Dynasty

For nearly three hundred years, the Davies family farmed the uplands of Caeadda, Llanwrin, sustaining not only a holding, but a way of life rooted in land, language, faith, and continuity.

This meticulously researched family history traces the Davies lineage from its eighteenth-century origins through successive generations of tenant farmers, charting their rise, resilience, and eventual departure from Caeadda in the twentieth century. Drawing on parish registers, wills, gravestones, census returns, and contemporary newspaper accounts, the book reconstructs everyday rural life in Montgomeryshire with clarity and precision.

More than a genealogy, this study places the Davies family within the wider social history of rural Wales, exploring themes of land tenure, Nonconformity, education, poverty, and respectability. Individual lives are examined in detail, from prosperous farmers and chapel leaders to those who fell into hardship, emigration, or obscurity, revealing the full human range of a long-established Welsh farming family.

Covering the period from c.1700 to 1966, The Davies Caeadda Family offers an accessible yet scholarly account of one family's relationship with a single farm across generations, and in doing so illuminates the broader story of Welsh rural society.
