THE DAUGHTER’S TALE by Armando Luis Correa After her cardiologist husband Julius is taken away by Nazi soldiers and their Berlin bookshop is destroyed, Amanda and her daughters, Viera and Lina, are left behind heartbroken, terrified and unsure of their future. Before he was taken away, Julius had arranged for Viera and Lina to board a refugee ship headed to Cuba (where Amanda’s brother lives). Knowing there was no guarantee or way to find out if the girls will make it to Cuba, Amanda decides to only send her eldest daughter Viera. Amanda then makes her way to the south of France with Lina where they seek refuge with a family friend. Unfortunately, I didn’t connect with this story as much as I thought I would. The plot started out strong and I was invested in the plights of Lina and Viera. However, the multiple plot holes were distracting and took me out of the story. I felt the author forgot all about Viera once she boarded the ship. We also never learn details about what happens to Amanda. I’m not sure why I’m drawn to novels based on WWII (and there are plenty!) as they are oftentimes incredibly heartbreaking, but I’m always thankful to have learned something new and/or have gained a deeper understanding of history. While these stories are important and should be shared, this one missed the mark for me. Rating: 3/5 ⭐️

Don’t ever give up

This was a heartbreaking book to read. This time in our world was hard and I loved the strength these girls survived with. Armando Lucas Correa did a wonderful job in telling the story of The Daughter’s Tale and I thank him for sharing it with us all.
