The Dark Side of Siddhis

From a scriptural standpoint, siddhis are acknowledged as real and potent phenomena--yet consistently accompanied by cautionary warnings. While they may arise naturally along the path of inner discipline, the ancient sages remind us that they are not the goal of spiritual life. In fact, they are often viewed as distractions, or even tests, that can mislead the aspirant from the path of liberation (moksha). This book aims to examine the lesser-discussed dimension of siddhis: their dangers. Drawing from authoritative sources in the yogic and Vedantic traditions, along with insights from mystics and spiritual teachers across centuries, we will explore how siddhis can entangle a seeker in ego, delusion, and even spiritual downfall. This exploration is not merely theoretical; it is supported by stories--both scriptural and historical--of individuals who have attained such powers, and the consequences they faced. Why focus on dangers, rather than on attainment? Because in an age where spiritual knowledge is widely accessible, but rarely contextualized, many seekers are drawn to the mystique of spiritual powers without understanding their karmic implications. The hunger for control, influence, or transcendental ability can unknowingly feed the very ego the spiritual path is meant to dissolve. At the same time, this book does not aim to condemn siddhis outright. Powers in themselves are not evil; rather, it is the attitude toward them, and their misuse, that causes harm. Even the Yoga Sutras acknowledge that siddhis may arise as byproducts of yogic refinement. However, Patanjali is clear in stating that they are obstacles to samadhi when pursued for their own sake (Yoga Sutras, III.38).
