Seven divine beings who govern the most fundamental conditions of mortal existence. Seven complete novels. One volume.
Thanatos - He is Death. Not the chaos of dying - but the specific personification of the ending, the being who comes for every mortal at the appointed moment. Sisyphus chained him. Heracles wrestled him. He came for them anyway in the end. He is the most certain of all possible divine presences.
Hypnos - He is Sleep. Twin brother of Death. He lives in the cave where the river Lethe flows and where poppies grow. He sends dreams to mortals every night. He put Zeus himself to sleep at Hera's request during the Trojan War. He is the most gentle of all possible divine presences - the necessary rest between one day and the next.
Nemesis - She is divine retribution. She organized the punishment of those whose fortune exceeded what the divine order permitted. She heard the prayers of those Narcissus had rejected and organized the pool. She was the most just of all possible divine beings - not cruel, not vengeful, but the specific and necessary correction of the imbalance between fortune and desert.
The Fates - Three sisters. Clotho spun the thread. Lachesis measured it. Atropos cut it. Even Zeus could not override them. They were older than the Olympians. They were the daughters of Themis. They determined every mortal life from its beginning to its end. They are the most absolute of all possible divine beings.
Eos - She was the dawn. She opened the gates of heaven every morning for the sun. She had been cursed by Aphrodite with insatiable desire and she loved mortal men who aged and died while she remained. Tithonus grew old and she could not stop it. She wept every morning and her tears were the dew. The dawn is her grief made beautiful.
Helios - He drove the solar chariot across the sky every day from east to west. He saw everything from his position above the world. He told Hephaestus about Ares and Aphrodite. He told Demeter that Hades had taken Persephone. He was the most comprehensive of all possible divine observers - nothing happened under his light that he did not see.
Selene - She was the moon. She loved Endymion and asked Zeus to grant him eternal sleep so she could visit him forever on the mountain. Every night she drove her silver chariot across the sky and looked down at the sleeping Endymion. The love was real. The sleeping was the price. She paid it willingly every night.
