Over the past few years Royal has been drawing his interpretations of the odd happenings described in the books of his favorite authors, Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. The authors collective stories, known as THE PENDERGAST NOVELS follows an enigmatic F.B.I. agent through a series of truly macabre investigations, unraveling a complex world of gruesome murders, nightmarish creatures and deep, dark secrets.Starting with his cookbook "Beyond Riverside Drive", Royal has delved into this dark world, creating over 140 disturbing black and white illustrations to accompany the more than 400 recipes based on foods referenced in THE PENDERGAST NOVELS. While compiling these illustrations, the artist also recreated some of his favorite moments from the novels in full color plates.The 140 color plates, known as THE DARK GALLERY was released by the artist in 2016 as a tribute to these amazing novels and to the two incredible authors that have given him so much joy- and admittedly "....more than a few nightmares." Due to the high cost of color printing the artist was asked if he could offer Dark Gallery in black & white. So here it is. " I really enjoy working in color" Royal says. "But to be honest, rendering these plates into a gray scale gave them a more eerie, macabre feel I think. They sort of remind me of the horror comics I read as a kid." The 600 + page Pendergast cookbook Beyond Riverside Drive as well as the full color version of Dark Gallery are also available.
