Book Overview

In this much-anticipated third edition of the best-selling anthology, David J. Flinders and Stephen J. Thornton once again bring together the best scholarship in curriculum studies. From John Dewey's nineteenth-century creed to Nel Noddings' twenty-first century aims, this thoughtful combination of new and timely essays provides a complete survey of the discipline coupled with concrete examples of innovative curriculum and an examination of contemporary topics. New to this edition are additional historical and contextual pieces from Maria Montessori and Jerome Bruner, and a thoroughly updated collection of contemporary selections, reflecting issues such as standardization, high-stakes testing, and globalization. Carefully balanced to engage with the history of curriculum studies while simultaneously looking ahead to its future, The Curriculum Studies Reader continues to be the most authoritative collection in the field.

Primer on Curriculum

Lots of articles by the greats in curriculum today. I am awe=struck by the materials presented in this book. I had no idea the state of education today. This book will help open your eyes to what NCLB is doing to our schools and our children.

The best

This book is the best I have read about curriculum. The first part takes you to a journey of the history of the field of curriculum. The following readings give you a wonderful variety of approaches in the matter.

Curriculum Studies

This book contains a nice cross section of articles about important issues in curriculum studies from the last hundred years to the present.

Essential for an educator's library

Thornton & Flinders have assembled a sterling collection of original writing by the icons of American Education. Their commentary is scholarly; their selection only slightly influenced by their fondness for Eisner. Otherwise it is absolutely the best and most frugal single volume an educator could have for foundational writings. Reading the original is so much more satisfying than the pre-digested summaries in textbooks, and these writers for the most part express their own theories quite well without interpretation. I've seen it used in graduate studies more often than undergrad, but it would be very appropriate for a high quality teacher preparation program in a liberal arts school that emphasizes literature and perennial concepts.
