A decade after developing an efficacious treatment for a highly infective RNA virus, a young scientist is pitched from the safe haven of faculty life into a senior position at a global medical research company, succeeding his late mentor. Despite his newfound luck, he finds himself haunted by the legacy of his old mentor as he tries to complete his unfinished work. Soon, he finds that a mistakenly chosen variable in a routine statistical test shows a web of secrets involving research ethics and clinical malpractice. He begins to suspect the cover-up may involve pharmaceutical companies, governments, and health governing bodies. The discoveries cause him to believe that his new boss's nonchalance may be more than ineptitude but is sinister and possibly, corrupt. Compelled by his ambition to fill his mentor's large shoes, he takes advantage of an opportunity to go over his boss's head with the help of a college friend. Conflicted by self-preservation and ethical obligations, he finds himself tossed between episodes of manic depression and feelings of inadequacy while navigating the nuisances of an old and uncertain love. Eventually, he begins to doubt the motives of his closest confidantes as he discovers a legacy of secrets his mentor and friends kept from him.
