The Culture Of Deceit: Who watches the watchers?

Alex is invited to do a major piece of work for the Parole Board in Banklyn High Security Prison but once there he is alerted to a serious matter related to the smuggling in of drugs. His informant is then murdered late one night in Hull and Alex begins to wonder what lies behind it. In this he is helped first by Peter, a young friend who in turns brings in his girl-friend Kelly, a technical wizard working for Customs and Excise who begins to unravel the mystery despite the almost total lack of interest shown by the police.Meanwhile Alex is involved with the application for Parole from a double child rapist and murderer and he visits the parents of the two girls. He opposes Parole but is amazed to discover it is granted by the Secretary of State. But this too is all a matter of deceit and what follows in the streets of Leeds is inevitable. For Alex it sometimes feels far too much to be dealing with, and his wife Emily, a well-known poet and her mother, are much more concerned with wanting to help him mind meaning in life. He had once been a Professor of Philosophy and then became Bishop of Truro which he detested and left after just two years, but where will he find a spiritual home? His psychiatrist makes an astonishing revelation, perhaps in the hope of assisting Alex.
