This book represents an insightful look into the ways Catholicism and its practitioners have both assimilated and remained distinct from mainstream Anglo-Saxon protestant Southern culture. In many regions of the country, Catholicism predominates or is at least one of the major denominations. Yet, with the exceptions of Southern Louisiana and some heavily Hispanic urban areas, that is not the case in the American South. Catholics in the region share many similarities with their protestant brethren yet in many cases seem to exhibit even more loyalty to the Catholic Church than Catholics elsewhere in the United States. It was an informative read, both as an anthropologist and as a Catholic!
