Taking the basic plot of the Cinderella tale, Harry B. Smith crafted a libretto for his musical burlesque which was considered modern for its time. Americanizing the British pantomimes which were becoming popular in America, Smith's libretto included topical jokes and plenty of opportunities for filling the stage with show girls. Originally produced by the Chicago Opera House as a spectacular extravaganza, it later was produced at the Star Theatre in New York and toured across the country for over 800 performances. Harry B. Smith was the most prolific of any American stage writer, generating over 6,000 lyrics and 300 librettos. He is considered the forefather of today's modern musical.
