This book was about how to become a "minimilist". (In other words, get rid of all your material stuff, your ideas of "status", start to live simply, start exercising, and start saving, saving, saving!!) By building your "kitty", you're able to buy your boat with cash. It, too, was about practical stuff and a much simpler life! The only regret I had was that it didn't have any pictures! Other than no pictures-I loved it!

Cruising for people with more sense than money.

This is a book about how to go cruising. What he is really dealing with in this book is the fear of what might go wrong if we go cruising, and how to plan for the best possible cruise. He does not say it in his book but the reality is that more yachts are wrecked by badly judged finances than the sea, and proper financial planning is the core of this book. If I were to consider this book to be at one end of the cruising book spectrum then 'Steel Away' by Smith and Moir would be at the other. This book could save you time, money and much anguish.

a down to earth no-nonsense book on cruising life

Really enjoyed both Jim's style and his philosophy which are based on practical and honorable life goals. He deliberately avoids the 'must-have-new-gadget' views and shows how by simplifying your life you can greatly enrich your value system. However Jim is a practical person who treats finances very seriusly with sound explanations. Highly recommended.

Educational and Entertaining

a bias review from a happily landlocked relative of a cruiser. I now understand the motivation and pure joy found by what i formally considered to be four insane people who sailed over the horizon. I have no desire to challange the vast blue of the oceans, but find in this book sound advice for examining any lifestyle and important reminderes that we are and do what we choose to be and do and a plan to make a change if needed. When the Sultana sails from it's harbor in New Zealand, at least one member of the family left behind will sleep a little better knowing that it's captain can write like he knows what he is doing and that he is certainly doing something he truly loves.

informative, humerous, practical

A must for potential cruisers. The author not only tells you what to do, he tells you why you should and backs up his reasoning with examples from his own experience of sailing half way round the world with a youg family, and the experiences of other cruisers they met on the way. It contains a wealth of information, and bursts a few long held erronous beliefs. Its suitable for both the experienced cruiser and the one who is still toying with the idea. The book is sprinkled with anecdotes which clearly demonstrate the author is a man of humour and wisdom. A thoroughly worthwhile and enjoyable book.
