I loved this book, partly because it was such a surprise. I was weeding my new (old) middle school library, but wanted to look over titles I wasn't familiar with before they got the heave-ho. It's really well written, has a very interesting plot and is full of carefully researched historical details. I recommend it often to students. I just wish the cover looked better, so kids would be more willing to give it a second glance.
Excellent!

Too bad this book is out of print. If you can find a copy grab one! As a z-shop seller, I was listing this book, browsed it and could not put it down. I canceled my listing and I am keeping my copy.It is set in the late 1800's. Kate gets an urgent message to travel to Seattle to the home of her younger sister and her wealthy merchant husband. Kate enters the parlor only to find her sister lying in a casket in a seriously divided household. The large staff of the household (including a 15 year old who becomes a main character) add many rich personalities to the story. An intriguing mystery unfolds all the while painting the picture of racial bias of the day. It mixes European culture with the magnificent culture of China, touches lightly on Native American and Irish. The message of racial harmony is projected though out the book and the undertone is clearly Christianity. Packed with excitement and adventure, every chapter ends with something that makes you push forward for answers. (The butlar didn't do it!)I am a homeschooling mom and having just covered early American history then Ancient China, this book is a great "tie together" and seems quite historically accurate. Suitable for the jr. high or high school reader, but a GREAT book all around for any age.I am going to look for more books by this author.
