The Cord That Loosened

By Silas Bellhaven

Mercy was sent downhill.
Witness came back repaired.

In the highland city of Marat-Sol, Amara has learned that truth can wound even when it is spoken cleanly. Her young sister, Sela, is only beginning to learn that lesson.

After the desperate mercy sent to the lower settlement of Keth-Rim, the empire arrives with a new demand: every act of aid must be counted, classified, and declared complete.

Water. Grain. Tools. Songs. Testimony. Mercy itself.

But before the review can seal the record, something unexpected comes back up the road.

Broken highland water-work, repaired by lowland hands.
A Madai household band strengthened with Keth-Rim copper.
A memory-cord braided from highland flax, lowland reed, and old Dahrani fragments-with one strand deliberately loosened and returned by another path.

To the elders, the returned objects are property.
To the imperial auditors, they are evidence to be contained.
To Sela, they are witness.

And witness is dangerous when everyone in power wants mercy to have an ending.

As the Mercy Accounting Review presses Marat-Sol toward a clean certification, Amara must navigate elder politics, imperial language, wounded neighbors, and Sela's fierce refusal to let the living be turned into categories. Because if Keth-Rim's repaired work is called only gratitude, then the lowland people remain recipients, not responders. Objects, not voices. The helped, never the witnesses.

But the cord has already loosened.

And once a hidden strand returns through the record, no seal can make mercy simple again.

The Cord That Loosened is a lyrical, faith-rooted fantasy novel for readers who love covenant worlds, moral courage, empire-versus-conscience tension, intricate cultural detail, and stories where truth must be carried with both boldness and care.

Enter Marat-Sol-but do not mistake completion for healing.
