Absolutely Great!

This wonderful book is but one third of Bishop Bossuet's remarkable Discourse on Universal History. But it is perhaps the most important part, as it elaborates the most important truths of human history, the continuity of religion. Bishop Bossuet was one of the greatest Churchmen of all time. He was selected by Louis XIV of France to be instructor to his son, the Dauphin. The great Hilaire Belloc styled him one of the greatest Christian expositors of all history. And, indeed, he was. Bossuet's message is well boiled down into his wonderful and compelling interpretation of the parable of the vineyard related by Our Lord in the Gospel according to Saint Matthew. The householder had planted the vineyard, that is true religion, founded upon His Covenant; and let it out to husbandmen, that is, to the Jews. In order to receive the fruits of it, He sends at sundry times His servants, who are the Prophets. Those wicked husbandmen put them to death. His goodness prompts Him to send to them His own Son. Him they handle still worse than the servants. At last, He takes His vineyard from them, and gives it to other husbandmen: he takes from them the grace of His Covenant in order to give it to the Gentiles. Herein, we have writ large for all to see the glorious continuity of religion. This is one of the most important and beautiful books of all time and should be read by all who would understand the human condition and the role of religion in our marvelous universe. God bless.
