For centuries Chelford Priory has nestled in the beautiful Cheshire countryside. But now a new young mistress, Penelope, the 24 year-old widow of the Marquess of Chelford, has taken over and has ambitious changes planned for the estate.
She begins to introduce these innovations. They are not universally popular with either servants or tenants. There are also envious relatives and others who covet the Estate. Then there is her father interfering and domineering. The young, inexperienced Marchioness is beset by difficulties.
An incident occurs which, at first, is thought to be an accident. After another frightening event it becomes obvious that someone is out to harm Penelope or her children. When her neighbour, a veteran of Waterloo, takes an interest will the the culprit be frightened off or will the situation become even more dangerous.
