Although most of the verses of The Confused Muse are written in the first person, they represent the thoughts, feelings, and attitudes of a wide spectrum of personalities. Some are living independently, either in a retirement facility or in their own homes. They continue to enjoy activities, although probably not as many as they once did. They are using a variety of coping skills to attempt to compensate for the confusion which they find creeping into many aspects of their lives. At the other end of the spectrum are the very confused, who may, nonetheless, have their moments of clarity. They react to the people and events in their lives in ways that are unexpected and frequently misunderstood. They cope with fears, anxieties, delusions, and frustrations, while constantly battling fatigue. The verses of The Confused Muse are presented in random order. Attempts to clarify, identify, and interpret are left to the reader.
Delightful book about the humorous challenges of aging and life in a retirement community

"The Confused Muse" would make a great gift for an elderly friend or baby boomers who need to understand the challenges faced by the aging process that their parents are going through. Jane Durham has done a superb job with her tongue-in-cheek, self-effacing humor. This should be required reading in jr/sr. high school English classes, as it shows how poetry can be used to reflect daily life; also, it is a good teaching tool about the older generation. I highly recommend this book!!!
