The characterization in this debut novel makes for a compelling read. While reading it, I found Martin Janowsky often in my thoughts-- a indication of my involvement with the characters. The reader experiences Martin's mistakes and poor decisions as well as his business and personal successes. This makes for a multidimensional character. LBJ is presented sympathetically, but with realistic flaws. I also commend the author's familiarity with San Antonio landmarks and good background research. Altogether a thoroughly enjoyable novel!
A compelling read

I found this book to be a compelling work of historical fiction that succeeds on many levels. The basic story is easily sound enough to provide a gratifying reading experience on its' own. The addition of thoroughly-researched American political figures and world events lends credibility to the tale, and enables the reader to identify more closely with the protagonist. While these historical events allow the reader to maintain his familiarity with the setting, they are never so overwhelming as to make the story predictable. On the contrary, this book is quite a page-turner, and is certainly a read that you will not regret.

In The Confidant, the author does a nice job in mixing historical information with fiction making the characters appear quite real. The book includes a nice balance of suspense, drama and romance that keeps the reader intrigued and wanting to read more. Hats off to Mr. Zealberg for a fine effort! I thoroughly enjoyed the book and highly recommend it.
