Book Overview

Hailed by The Washington Post as "a definitive synthesis of the best editions" and by The Times of London as "a monument to Shakespearean scholarship," The Oxford Shakespeare is the ultimate anthology of the Bard's work: the most authoritative edition of the plays and poems ever published.

Now, almost two decades after the original volume, Oxford is proud to announce a thoroughly updated second edition, including for the first time the texts of The Reign of Edward III and Sir Thomas More, recognizing these two plays officially as authentic works by Shakespeare. This beautiful collection is the product of years of full-time research by a team of British and American scholars and represents the most thorough examination ever undertaken of the nature and authority of Shakespeare's work. The editors reconsidered every detail of the text in the light of modern scholarship and they thoroughly re-examined the earliest printed versions of the plays, firmly establishing the canon and chronological order of composition. All stage directions have been reconsidered in light of original staging, and many new directions for essential action have been added. This superb volume also features a brief introduction to each work as well as an illuminating General Introduction. Finally, the editors have added a wealth of secondary material, including an essay on language, a list of contemporary allusions to Shakespeare, an index of Shakespearean characters, a glossary, a consolidated bibliography, and an index of first lines of the Sonnets.

Compiled by the world's leading authorities, packed with information, and attractively designed, The Oxford Shakespeare is the gold standard of Shakespearean anthologies.

Excellent condition and read!

I love this book, especially since I won a best actor award in college for Othello as Othello. Every work is timeless and filled with universal themes. I donated my copy to a kid in college, and now I'm ordering another copy for myself as an award-winning screenwriter. Shakespeare understood human nature and created some of the best characters ever. I believe everyone should read Shakespeare because he really helps you understand why people do what they do, much like people in the Bible, and his stories are very entertaining.

Very Happy

A very affordable collection of Shakespeare’s works! My copy arrived a few days early, and was closer to “Very Good” condition (I ordered Good because they were out of Very Good), which was a pleasant surprise. Overall I’m very happy with my new book, and I can’t wait to read it.

Shakespearean Bliss

I 100% NEVER EVER thought I'd find a copy of William Shakespeares COMPLETE works that I could afford, so when I searched on her and this came up I was shocked and honestly didn't actually expect it to be the complete works but took the chance and ordered. The fact that is it is, it is literally everything, makes my heart and mind soar. I am a Shakespeare fan of epic proportions and having this in my physical library makes me happy to an extent I cannot explain.

Extremely pleased

The book arrived quickly...this book looks new...it appears that it has never been read...it's a beautiful book, to say the least...I'm anxious to read it

Very Good

It was a very good read and I liked the binding too.

Shakespeare

I am returning this book . Letters too small for me to read . Have to find a better edition .

A forever reference set

Keep this in your library - not only does it look good it feels good. You will always have Shakespeare on hand to get in your literary fix. Shakespeare in a serious readers library is a must!

The Beauty of Exploring Poetry
Published by William Shelton • April 27, 2023
As a reader, and an avid one at that, I struggle to apply the same level of zeal to poetry as I have my more preferred topics, such as historic fiction, or biography. Yet every April, when the lilac bushes in my lawn are thronged with flowers, I find myself quoting, "When lilacs last in the dooryard bloomed…"

Margaret Atwood is 81 years old today! The renowned Canadian author has been publishing poetry, novels, nonfiction, children’s books, and more since 1961, but her star just keeps on rising. Known largely for books like The Handmaid’s Tale, you may be surprised to learn that speculative fiction actually represents a small fraction of the versatile author’s work.
