On December 21, 1891, the inaugural basketball game took place, with each team consisting of nine players. The goal was to kick a soccer ball into a peach basket held by the opposite team. As the game grew in popularity, adjustments were made, such as modifying the baskets so that the ball could be recovered more readily. Over the subsequent years, basketball's popularity grew across the United States and even beyond its borders. Basketball was sanctioned for Olympic competition for the first time in 1932. Basketball's regulations have evolved and been fine-tuned over the years, with the most notable recent alteration being the addition of a shot clock in 1954. Today, basketball has a tremendous global following and is one of the most widely played sports in professional leagues throughout the world. It has had a profound effect on mainstream society, permeating all areas of the arts from fashion to music to film.
