To avoid spreading disease when trimming your orchid, always use clean pruning shears. To sterilize your pruning shears, immerse them in a cup of rubbing alcohol for 30 seconds. Shears should be opened and closed many times to ensure that the alcohol reaches the blades. After soaking in the alcohol, take the shears out and dry them off with a paper towel. It shouldn't take more than a few minutes for the rubbing alcohol to dry, since it is a fast-drying substance. 2 It's best to wait until a stem's blossoms have all fallen off before cutting them. Do not prune your orchid just yet if it is still flowering or if there are healthy blooms on the stalks. Do not pick the flowers till the blossoms have faded.
