As caregiver to her mother, author Webb gives the reader a wonderful chronicle of life with her mother before she became ill with cancer, during her struggle with the terminal aspects of the illness, and then her own spiritual struggles during and after her mother's passing. Over an 8-year period, Webb encountered very few medical staff that respected seniors. She encountered hospital Residents who did not care about any legal documents such as 'Do Not Resuscitate' or 'Living Wills' and did what they wanted no matter the cost to her mother's health or quality of life; it was all just 'numbers' game to these up-and-coming doctors - meaning they wouldn't get hired by the best practices or hospitals if a certain percentage of patients died "on their watch" whether the patients were terminal or not, they disregarded end of life legal documents. She found that the staff at her mother's church were indifferent to her mother's spiritual needs - refusing to have a priest visit her mother to receive Last Rite Sacraments. And, along the way, the author questioned her own abilities to care effectively for her beloved mother and realized over time that she had to be proactive in a manner that most people would not believe - whether with the medical community or with the spiritual community. After all was said and done, Webb had to find her own peaceful center again, and wonder if she had, indeed, done all she could for her mother. An enlightening read for those readers who may be entering the phase of caregiver. Knowing what to do, and how is key to providing the best environment for a loved one and yourself.
