The humid Havana air hung heavy with unspoken anxieties as the Morales family prepared to leave their beloved Cuba.
The tightening grip of Castro's communist regime had made their decision a necessity, a wrenching farewell to the vibrant island they called home.
Yet amidst the flurry of packing and tearful goodbyes, Francisco Morales, the family patriarch, remained steadfast. His roots ran too deep in Cuban soil; he could not bring himself to abandon his native land.
Before his grandchildren, Raquel, David, and Andrea, depart for the USA to start a new life, Francisco gives them an antique compass.
His voice, thick with emotion, carried a cryptic message. "This compass will guide you to your greatest treasure.
But its secrets will remain hidden until each of you has reached your twenty-fifth year. Only when you stand together, all three of you, will it reveal its true purpose."
With this ominous comment, the children and their parents embark for the USA and a new life, but their grandfathers' remark always stays with them.
