The name Cochise means "having the quality or strength of an oak". Born around 1805, he was leader of the Chihuicahui Apache during the Apache Wars era from 1861 - 1872. Along with Geronimo and Mangas Coloradas, he resisted intrusions into traditional American Indian lands by Mexicans and Americans during the 19th century. Cochise commanded areas that now include the northern region of Sonora, Mexico; New Mexico, and Arizona.
