"The Colorful Dragon was written when my husband and I were teaching ballroom dancing toa group of friends. One of them said, 'I know a couple who built a room just for dancing, andthey might like to have lessons.' Thus began our 'Monica and Yee Dance Group.' We metalmost every Friday for five or so years, and the twelve couples became very friendly, going toone another's parties, weddings, and picnics. One favorite pastime was going to Chinatown inPhiladelphia for dinners since the couple who hosted the dancing were Chinese, as were theirfriends. One of the dinners was during the Chinese New Year, and there was a dragon at one ofthe restaurants. That was my inspiration for this story."
