Love the book

The author, Emma Jean Rutherford Duaine, was my Dad's twin sister, and my dad is featured in the book. So I am prejudiced, but I think this is a wonderful book. She tells great stories about life in a small mountain town during the depression, and includes the Whoopenhollar stories that her father wrote to his children while he was away working in the CCC camps in the 1930s. Her gift for writing obviously came from her father, who was a great writer himself. I grew up hearing about The Whoopenhollar Kids but had never read the complete group of stories until I read this book. Jean Duaine passed away on May 29, 2010, and this book is her legacy. It's a great read, and would be a wonderful addition to any school history curriculum.

Love the Whoopenhollars

Beautiful and fluent prose that makes you want to go back in time to Georgetown, CO and meet this family. It's a wonderful look at an era in Am. history that is actually quite timely and nostalgic at the same time. I highly recomment it and actually intend to use select passages in my American History and writing classes for the 5th and 6th grades. It is a lovely memoir packed with poignancy, humor and the very evident and abundant love of a father for his family. The clever tales he writes for his children are not only entertaining, they are instructive and anchored in guidance and are a moral compass on how to live a diligent and constructive, yet fun life.
