Since reading these Prayers of the Faithful, I have tried to pay closer attention to the weekly intercessions in my home parish and those I have visited. Before I knew of Fr. Kwatera's work in this area, I found them simply humdrum; now I recognize the missed opportunity for what Pope Benedict has described as "calling for the application of creativity." In a brief introduction, Fr. Kwatera explains the origin, purpose, and format of the prayer of the faithful and his own efforts to provide "fresh language shaped by the liturgical feasts, seasons and the Sunday Scripture readings." He searches the day's readings for a special word or phrase and links it to the prayer of the faithful through repetition. "In that way, a pattern is developed that draws the worshipers into the intentions and provides a certain rhythmic, lyrical quality to them." Though it would be easy enough to copy Fr. Kwatera's method, there's still the matter of his gift for language. Intercessions for Martin Luther King Jr. holiday contain such phrases as "find deliverance in renewed zeal for justice," and "rid our hearts of the fear and jealousy that threaten peace," and "especially those martyred in the struggle for civil rights." So, I recommend this work to every parish. As the author suggests, the prayers can be used as is or they can be altered to fit particular circumstances. To that end, the publisher has included a CD containing Microsoft Word files of the text according to calendar date.
