Sheer fun, again!

Man, this is fun. You can read reaviwes about albums you love and testify Popoff bashing it mercilessly. The contrary can also happen. Also, his opinion about a certain album may be almost identical to your opinion. It's fun, and the most pleasure comes from the fact that he clearly loves hard music without being a moron. I'm a little biased to enjoy his work, because there are some points that we share in commons: absolute love for Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy, UFO, early Priest, Bon Scott's AC/DC; despise for Iron Maiden since Fear of The Dark (it's a miracle this band did not die after so many disgraceful albums - this must be some kind of mass hypnosis made by Steve Harris - not to mention the lousy edited DVD's and the thousand compilations and live albums to rip off the "fans"); the "0" rating he gives to Def Leppard (probably the greatest sell out in the históry of hard music - Mutt Lange managed to totally suck out the life of this band - even Shania Twain make better records!) Again, there is some mispelling, but it's enjoyable reading.

Another Essential Record Collecting resource

Like his first two Metal guides, volume three is another essential collecting resource. Yeah...Martin can be opinionated (he's certainly bashed some of my favorite records) but at the same time I've bought albums based on his reviews that I never would have known about that are forgotten gems. You can tell by his reviews that he's a true fan of Metal and his writing style has great wit and humor. Sure he gives his opinion...so what, we're not all gonna have the same favorite Judas Priest album.

Another great Heavy Metal Book!

Martin gives us another great guide to Heavy Metal music...this time from the 1990's. He gives a very detailed and colorful review of each groups albums. I own all three volumes.

More Metal

Popoff again delivers with his latest guide. I have read enough critques of his past works to point out that Popoff clearly views his guides as his opinions. Considering he has listened to all of these selections and seems to be able the nail the good and the bad of most bands, I found this another accessable and usable piece of writing. Highly recommended as an excellent source for Metal Music, not an easy task; this book also gives fairly consistent ideas on which albums might be worth consideration for listening. Popoff's style is straightforward, honest, civil, and adds some unique humor to the music he reviews. His appendixes are fantastic and his views are noteworthy, as he has emerged as the major writer of the genre. The sheer volume of music covered by this guide, along with the 1970s and 1980s Guides, is staggering. If you want one book to examine what could be considered a directionless time of Metal Music to weed out the bad stuff from the classics, this is the book for you. Check out Martin Popoff's other books, as his UFO, Rush, Blue Oyster Cult, and Black Sabbath books are all entertaining and offer insight. Also, consider picking up his other Metal guides, which are the best of Heavy Metal genre.
