The Collected Sermons of John Dawson (1999-2006) preserves a selected body of preaching delivered during the author's years in pastoral ministry. These sermons were preached in the context of gathered worship and reflect the theological concerns, pastoral responsibilities, and communal life of the local church at the turn of the millennium.
Rather than revising these messages into essays or devotional reflections, they are presented substantially as they were originally delivered. The intent of this volume is archival rather than adaptive: to preserve a faithful record of proclaimed teaching shaped by Scripture, careful preparation, and pastoral attentiveness to ordinary believers.
John Dawson did not enter ministry with ambitions of public speaking or authorship. As an introverted pastor who labored intensely over each sermon, preaching was for him both the most demanding and the most formative work of his vocation. These sermons bear the marks of that labor: close engagement with the biblical text, theological clarity, and a serious view of the calling to preach God's Word responsibly.
The sermons collected here emerged from a particular season of life and ministry, yet they address enduring themes of Christian discipleship, suffering, perseverance, repentance, grace, and the supremacy of God in all things. They are the work of a pastor learning, often imperfectly, what it means to follow Christ faithfully in the midst of weakness, responsibility, and dependence on grace.
This book is intended for readers who value preaching as a theological and pastoral act, and for those interested in sermons as they are actually preached rather than retrofitted for publication. It may be read devotionally, studied carefully, or simply kept as a record of a decade of ministry now past.
If there is anything in these sermons that is mistaken or poorly judged, the responsibility belongs to the author alone. If there is anything that is true, faithful, or helpful, all glory belongs to God.
About the Author
John Dawson is a former pastor who received his Master of Divinity from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and went on to serve local congregations in Charlottesville, Virginia, and Los Angeles, California. His years in ministry were formative both theologically and personally, shaping his understanding of faith, vocation, and perseverance over time.
Following his pastoral work, he built a long career outside the church and now writes in reflection on earlier seasons of life and calling. He lives in North Carolina with his wife and their dog, and spends his time writing, walking, traveling, and attending to the things that endure.
