The coal mining town of Moss Creek in 1931 wasn't much, one company store and one gas station. Families living there had very little. For Johnny Marko, age ten, and his mother and father, life couldn't be any rougher. But Johnny does have one solace, a love for his mother, and a deep admiration for his father whom he follows around like a shadow. Then one unexpected summer an accident tears his family apart. His father dies in a suspicious accident. Johnny has a suspicion, but at his young age is unsure of himself. Johnny and his mother eke out a living, and a few years later move to a larger city. But the memories haunt him, and many years - and a world war - later Johnny returns to his hometown under an assumed name. He concocts a plan he knows borders on lunacy. But he commits himself and in the months that follow all that used to be only bits and parts of a dark memory now plays itself out to its horrible conclusion.
