Things get even more horrifying for Talli...

Teenager Tallibeth McAlister has had a hell of a few weeks. It wasn't so long ago that she found out that vampires do exist and that one such was responsible for the rash of missing youths in her little town of Westerberg. One by one, Talli has lost her friends and her boyfriend to this malevolent creature. And it's not over yet. As Talli shockingly learns at the end of THE SUBSTITUTE, she herself is well on her way to being converted into a vampire. As THE COACH opens up, only three days have elapsed, time which Talli has whiled away ensconced in her bedroom, safely away from sunlight. Meanwhile, Chris Delany is hauled in for police questioning regarding the disappearance of Chris and Talli's friend and fellow student Casey (who was killed in THE SUBSTITUTE). Casey's dad, coach of Westerberg High, definitely thinks Chris is hiding something (which he is) and becomes obsessed with stalking him. What is it about Westerberg that attracts the undead? Because here come some more. Talli actually sees the arrival of the mysterious Seth as a fortuitous thing, seeing as how Seth has offered to help her with her odd affliction. Chris, however, isn't too sure about this. As it turns out, he's right to be suspicious (But, c'mon, how startled are you, really, that this dude Seth is up to no good?). It's probably a temporary phase, but I've been getting a bit tired of vampires, getting all Twilight-ed out and True Blood-ed out. But THE COACH turns out to be another good read from M.C. Sumner and brings his fast-paced 1994 YA horror trilogy to a close. I'm a fan of M.C. Sumner (even though I don't think he's written anything for a while now), and Talli is such a sympathetic heroine that you can't help but pull for her. Despite her harrowing experiences in The Principal and The Substitute, Talli has never been more tested than now. Thanks to Seth, Talli finds herself not only now able to withstand exposure to sunlight but also that her senses have been incredibly heightened. And there's a weird hunger in her. As Talli succumbs to her new abilities and bit by bit begins to lose her humanity, you really do start wondering if temptation might prove all too irresistible. Will Talli turn all the way? Can Chris do anything to help her? Set in a high school backdrop, there are echoes of Buffy in this trilogy, only minus much of the humor. So this series really comes off as dark and bleak, this vibe brought about in part by the metamorphosis of Talli, who in THE PRINCIPAL starts out a normal high schooler but who's turned into this present-day paranoid and alienated girl. A sense of hope endures with the presence of Chris Delany, who will do anything to help Talli out, even as his school teacher sister begins to have doubts about Talli. It's already been established that Chris is a devout reader of mysteries, and his bump of curiousity renders him a dogged researcher. His time at the library turns up new insights about the vampires he and Talli are combatting. You

It's a great book!
