Detroit teaches you early how to read silence.
It teaches you how to tell the difference between help and harm, between opportunity and a trap. It teaches you that some places don't look dangerous until you really pay attention.
My name is James Stoutermire. I'm from Detroit, and I write stories rooted in the city, the streets, and the things people whisper about but never say out loud. I'm the author of the Detroit Urban Legend series, Can't Catch, No Cut, Get 'Em Boy, and other gritty, street-level stories that blend real fears with fiction to expose something deeper.
If you've read my work before, you already know my approach. I don't chase monsters-I chase systems. I take real places, real struggles, and real rumors, and I ask a simple question:
What if it's worse than we think?
The Clinic is a collection of connected stories about places we're told to trust. Clinics. Fertility centers. Blood banks. Places that look clean, professional, and legal on the surface-but take more than they give underneath.
These stories are not about shock value. They're about vulnerability. About how desperation gets marketed as opportunity. About how certain lives don't make the news when they disappear. About how paperwork can hide harm, and silence can protect power.
Everything in this book is fiction-but the fear behind it is real. The patterns are real. The questions are real.
This book isn't here to tell you what to believe.
It's here to make you look twice.
At the building on the corner.
At the flyer offering easy money.
At the place that says, "We're here to help."
Because sometimes the most dangerous places are the ones that promise care.
Welcome to The Clinic.
