A ghost story that really happened. The story follows Carol, who takes a vacation to Maine only to be contacted by a long-dead woman named Violet, who wants her to chase her short and tragic life and who is taken over by the story, the tragedies she experiences and the resolutions of those tragedies, while also trying to deal with a relationship of her own with Ron, the man she loves and travels with. Carol must learn why Violet wants her to discover this story, and what she can do about what she finds. She must also come to terms with her own life and her own pains at the same time. Both prove to be almost more than she bargains for as the trip and the tale unfold across the decades, across time and across the miles.
