An album of 61 full page color plates Orra White Hitchcock (1796 - 1863) was one of America's earliest women scientific illustrators and artists. Between 1828 and the 1840s she made hundreds of large and striking classroom charts used as lecture aids by her geologist husband Edward Hitchcock. The drawings include geologic cross-sections, maps, prehistoric beasts, marine life, fossils and dinosaur footprints. They include original illustrations of her husband's ideas and discoveries as well as copies of scientific illustrations from contemporary works. Originals of the drawings in the present volume can be found at the Archives & Special Collections, Amherst College, Massachusetts.
