Book Overview

In The Clairvoyant Countess, the bestselling author of the beloved Mrs. Pollifax series gives us the mysterious Madame Karitska, who can see things no one else can--including murder.

Madame Karitska has a style all her own--a rare blend of psychic power, an exotic past, and an uncanny gift for common sense. But when a chance encounter with Detective-Lieutenant Pruden of the Police Department catapults her into the midst of a seamier side of life, she must use all her resources to keep danger at bay.

"Dorothy Gilman is one of those authors that we would like to lock in a tower and command to produce a novel at least every three months. To get a new one is to become ecstatic, to finish it is to grieve, and to wait for the next one is torment "--Chattanooga Times

Like a police procedural with a psychic thrown in!!

I just finished reading this for the second time. I loved it!!! It is a bit dated, it was written in 1975, but it's how Madame Karitska, a clairvoyant, helps the police with some neighborhood issues. Too short!!! I could have read twice as many pages. Sure, there wasn't a lot of development of the characters, I'll give that one to a previous reviewer, but there was something so heartwarming about how Madame K. helped people so generously, so humbly and so effectively, I just loved it, just loved it! The second, and only other, book about Madame K, Kaleidescope, I remember to be quite good as well. I'm getting ready to reread it now.

Wonderful! An excellent read; highly recommended

I love Dorothy Gilman's Mrs. Pollifax series (particularly the early books -- through and including Mrs. Pollifax on Safari, although I still eagerly read all of them as soon as they're published), and adored A Nun in the Closet. Although I hadn't expected to like this one, I was very pleasantly surprised. It is thoroughly entertaining and enjoyable -- one of the few mysteries I've saved to reread.

clairvoyant countess

ive only read this book about 10+ times, on the the other hand ive read everything dorothy gilman has written, several many times. i have always liked the clairvoyant countess and wondered many times why no sequels? there are some movies, books, plays that can be enjoyed many times over and this is one. a cold day, a fire place, cup of tea, afgan and a good book how good it is.

Murder,Vodoo and Humor

Neat story about a woman who is clairvoyant and the people she meets. Great little detective/adventure story in a deceptivly small book. For lovers of Mrs. Pollifax, Mrs. Gilman has invented Madame Karistka, another irrespressible woman with tons of style and savvy.
