A journey To Freedom

The Circus Cage by Rosalie Douglas is a delightful book which describes Douglas's inner journey from the bondage of social convention to personal freedom. The vehicle for her self-transformation is The Personal Totem Pole Process,® a guided imagery technique developed by psychologist Eligio Stephen Galegos, Ph.D. and described at length in his book, The Personal Totem Pole. Both books are published by Moon Bear Press, Santa Fe, NM. Briefly, The Personal Totem Pole Process® is an interactive meditation led by a trained guide in which the client, or journeyer, initially meets different inner animals representing the seven chakras or power centers which in East Indian tradition are believed to connect the spiritual and physical bodies and to represent the centers of specific human abilities. Most people are familiar with the "third eye" the center of intuition and inner sight. Prompted by the guide, the journeyer interacts with the animals which spontaneously appear when called. Journeyer and animals undertake regenerative imaginary journeys which symbolically explore and heal long-standing problem areas and issues. Through the relaxing process of journeying with the animals, the client is able to access long-forgotten information and depths of inner wisdom which remain inaccessible to the conscious mind. As Douglas describes her guided visualization journeys with her animals into the unexplored, depths of her mind and emotions, she gives readers an intimate look at her life and some of the previously unrecognized of causes of the difficulties she has encountered in life. As she identifies, accepts, and releases past hurts and sorrows, the animals also grow and transform signifying her own inner development. In addition to symbolic healing journeys, the animals also offer Douglas insight into her daily life and concrete advice on how to improve her life in the present. "Your period is making me irritable," says the wolf, Douglas's animal of emotion. "Just let me lie under the tree. It helps when you can accept feeling badly and then admit it. It's hard to put up a front" (37). Summa, a butterfly and the author's heart-chakra animal representing love and compassion adds, "Being irritable doesn't mean being unlovable. . . . Acknowledge your feelings without judging" (37). The Circus Cage is a refreshing account of one woman's experience with The Personal Totem Pole Process®. For each journeyer the process will be different just as each person is unique. However, the chakra animals offer an elegantly simple means of improving one's quality of life and in the words of Douglas's heart butterfly, "We are always here. Let us help when problems happen, in times of stress. You don't use the resources you have" (44).
