Henn thinks that the Church is a uniquely distinctive grouping of people because its origins and aims fundamentally concern the relationship of humans with God. Moreover, because this relationship is initiated by God, the Church is rightly understood as the result of his redeeming activity. The book falls into three parts- the church as a community of faith; the life of the Church; and the Church as a community of service. Part 1 considers the faith found in the Bible, how faith is passed on from one generation to another and the Church's mission to proclaim the good news. Part 2 examines the Church's life of worship and the celebration of the sacraments amongst the various denominations. Finally, Henn considers Jesus' own example as one who came to serve and the Holy Spirit's manifold gifts, which are the basis of all service within the Church. Henn argues that the encounter with Christ that gave birth to the Church in the first place is as necessary as ever for it to continue in existence now, two thousand years later. Thus the Church needs to be today a community in which people can meet the living, risen Jesus.
