The Chinese Soviets, originally published in 1937, is a comprehensive view of the fast growing area in China which was coming under the influence of the Chinese Soviets, a book whose timeliness cannot be overestimated. The author in 1934, having just returned from an extended trip to China, received first-hand information of one of the most important developments facing the political and economic world today. Books about Soviet Russia have been countless, but no writer, with perhaps the exception of Agnes Smedley, had dealt with Soviet China. Yet the fact remains that there is a large area of Central China which is directly under the control of the Communist Party of China, there is a Chinese Red Army which, despite its lack of equipment, has been amazingly successful against the armies of Chiang-Kai Shek, and a worker's government has been set up and is spreading rapidly.
