The Chinese Lantern is a play written by Laurence Housman that tells the story of a young woman named Iris who is forced into marriage with a wealthy older man, Sir Joseph Londe. Despite her reluctance, Iris agrees to the marriage in order to save her family from financial ruin. However, she soon discovers that Sir Joseph is a cruel and abusive husband who cares only for his own pleasure. As the story unfolds, Iris meets and falls in love with a young artist named Robert, who encourages her to break free from her unhappy marriage and pursue her dreams. Together, they devise a plan to escape Sir Joseph's clutches and start a new life together.Throughout the play, Housman explores themes of love, freedom, and the struggle for independence in a society that values tradition and conformity above all else. The Chinese Lantern is a powerful and thought-provoking work that offers a glimpse into the lives of women in early 20th century England and the challenges they faced in their quest for happiness and fulfillment.1908. Housman studied art at the Lambeth School of Art and the Royal College of Art. He had great success as an illustrator, but when his eyesight began to fail, he turned to writing books and plays. He wrote 80 books during his lifetime. He often seemed to fall afoul of the censors, though, for religious and political reasons. A committed socialist and pacifist, in 1907, he helped found the Men's League for Women's Suffrage. He was also an honorary associate of the Women Writers' Suffrage League. The cast of The Chinese Lantern features a Master of Arts and his family, students, apprentices and craftsmen; and assorted others.
