James Malone's The Chickasaw Nation is an old turn of the century history of the Chickasaw. Today, they are best known as one of the Five Civilized Tribes, along with the Seminole, Choctaw, Cherokee, and Creek. Unlike some of the other Five Civilized Tribes, the Chickasaw's origins linked them all the way back to some of the Ancient Moundbuilders, among the first Native Americans in the region. The Chickasaw were praised by 19th century Americans for adapting their culture, but they also suffered a historic tragedy as part of the Trail of Tears. Though remembered mostly for the Cherokee, the Trail of Tears also inflicted hardships on the Chickasaw from which they never truly recovered.
