Sara moved into the Magnificent Ch'teau retirement community soon after she turned 55, the minimum age required. She makes friends with Fredrika, whom she calls "Freddie." The two of them meet daily on a bench under a weeping willow tree, sharing gossip about their neighbors, who range in age up to their friend Marty's 101. He claims to be 99, lying about his age to keep people from thinking he's old. When Freddie learns Sara dreamed of becoming an actress, running away from home at 18 to take a train to Hollywood, she demands to know the rest of her story. While Sara shares daily episodes of her life, including her two love affairs, one of which ends in sorrow, the other in happiness, we learn about the Chateau's other residents. Their stories reveal the achievements, losses, laughter and courage of a remarkable community.
