The resurgence of interest in the Charismata, or Charismatic graces, in the last 40 years has given rise to differences of theological outlook arising from Catholic and Protestant sources. This text addresses those various topics and differences and is divided into three parts. The first part is a translation of Fr. hagen's authoritative text on the nature of the charismatic graces by Ryan Grant. The second part is the original Latin text of Fr. Hagen, which is provided here for the sake of scholars who wish to read the original text which is rare and hard to find. The third part is a chapter, originally from Fr. Ripperger's work The Nature and Psychology of Diabolic Influence, which addresses other topics not addressed in Hagen's work.
I recommend this book if you are interested in the traditional, pre Vatican II perspective on the charismatic graces. It thoroughly explains the speaking in tongues as it has been traditionally understood prior to the novelty of Pentecostalism. It includes specific magisterial texts related to this.
BUT. . . .
I was disappointed that it didn't give any historical context related to the protestant influence on the modern view. the book has a highly theological tone to it, and only evaluates the catholic writing. Which is okay, but I guess I expected more. It is a shorter book than I realized.
however, I am most dissatisfied that it has not solved my conundrum at all. I am still trying to reconcile the elements of the Catholic charismatic renewal that have been bishop approved and implemented in local catholic ministries with my own personal discomfort and my own uncertain theological understanding. Usually when I research catholic theological questions I walk away with enlightenment and resolution. I didn't find that here. This book takes a disconnected hard line toward the traditional perspective without any real engagement with information and evidence to the contrary (which does also exist elsewhere in the history, tradition, and magisterium of the church).
