"I am Faery and Faery is me."

On Samhain in medieval Scotland, pregnant Janet rescues her lover Tam Lin from being sacrificed by the Wild Hunt--but the callous Faery Queen is not finished with them yet. Over the span of a single night, the Queen and Janet spar over Tam Lin's fate. The Queen aims to win, knowing how fickle mortals can be. Long before she was royalty, she was simply Bess, the changeling daughter of a midwife.

Born with magical and mortal blood, Bess feared there was no true place for her on either side of the veil. She found refuge in the arms of the charming Thomas Shepherd, the bastard son of a local noble. While villagers viewed her as a scandal, Bess's cunning knowledge and secret dark gifts attracted the attention of the elf lord Amadan. Wily and silver-tongued, Amadan led Bess into Faery's realm of decadence, where her heart warred against her destiny. She fought to keep both--but at what cost?

Inspired by Scotland's famous "Ballad of Tam Lin" and weaving together mystical folklore and tragic romance, The Changeling Queen's journey into memory, betrayal, and redemption will leave you spellbound.

A good retelling

It was interesting to see the story of Tam Lin from another perspective. It certainly paints a different picture about the Queen of Faerie and why she takes mortals as lovers, including the infamous Tam Lin. Though most of the story was before that (as the Queen is telling Janet and Tam Lin why she needs to sacrifice) when she was a half Fae half mortal changeling called Bess. And reading about that really made me feel for her. Life in that time would be tough for any woman, even more so when they have fae blood which limits where they can go, and labels them as outcast/other. Despite that, Bess does her best to follow in her mother's footsteps as a healer, even towards those that look down on her. There is love, hardships, sacrifices, and tricky fae business and I had to keep reading to see how it all would change Bess (caring and kind to others, including the bittersweet tale of her Shepherd King) into the hardened Queen of Faerie who also has a bit of a softer side hidden deep down (at least until after Tam Lin!) because it is what the land of Faerie needs (and boy is it a nightmare when the sacrifice is not made!). The atmosphere was well done in this book and I could really see all of it, good, bad, and heartbreaking. It was an enjoyable read because I love alternate retellings of old stories from a new point of view. I am glad I got the chance to do so.
