The 2022 United States elections will be placed on Tuesday, November 8, 2022. During this midterm election year, all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 seats in the Senate will be contested. Thirty-nine state and territory governorship and countless additional state and municipal elections will also be contested. This will be the first election influenced by the redistricting that will follow the 2020 census. State laws define regulations that impact voting rights, including casting votes by mail and in person. Local election authorities are in charge of conducting elections by processing postal ballots and running in-person voting stations. The federal government may play a role in defending voting rights, though. The Justice Department may pursue lawsuits, and the White House can take actions to support electoral infrastructure and security. Many Democrats in Congress were frustrated that they couldn't generate enough votes to approve substantial voting rights legislation this year. They had hoped for a new statute that would safeguard in-person voting and voting by mail in all 50 states.
