A wonderful thriller with a variety of twists and turns...

This is an excellent novel that you can not stop reading; there is not a boring moment. Anne McLean Matthews tells the story of Helen Meyer, a depressed therapist and mother of two. Helen's children are grown and her husband of twenty-five years has recently passed away. Helen's distressed life sends her to a vacationing cabin in the woods of New Hampshire. The last time she was at the cabin was with her family nearly fifteen years ago. At the cabin, Helen is abducted by a disturbed man and is tortured for what seems to be a lifetime. The interesting thing about this story is how Helen relates to the serial killer. Helen Meyer is a person whose courage you will long remember. Helen's vacation begins terrifying and concludes with a gruesome murder.

Couldn't put it down

Once I started reading I couldn't put it down. Some parts had my heart racing and at times had me gasping for air(some of the decriptions were so vivid). Passed the book on to friends and they also enjoyed the book.

One of the best books I've ever read!

This book is amazing! It starts off quick, and never EVER lets go after that. Psychologist Helen Myrer (a great character) heads up to New Hampshire for three weeks at a cabin she and her late husband Al used to share all the time. Almost immediately, she realizes she is in danger....Someone is there with her. Using her psychological brilliance, she struggles to stay alive through cunning techniques, but ends up going mad with the struggle to escape. Thus, we are submersed in an excruciating experience. Helen becomes captive of a serial kidnapper, whose past is a mystery full of doors to open...and some that will lead to horrors worse than the imagination would like to admit to.Little more I can give away about this enthralling book, other than YOU MUST READ IT! Anne McLean Matthews is simply amazing, and I hope to read more like this of hers. She writes with such emotion and power. And relentlessness. This book never gives you a relief point ever. Read this when you have a lot of time. I promise, you'll be sitting there reading for a long time. I couldn't stop reading at points. True, it is quite intense at moments. (When Helen is crawling through the tunnel of rats and rat nests!) At points, you almost beg for the book to let up on you. But it never does until the very end, but even then, you will remember everything. I still can't forget this book since I've read it. And you won't forget it either. This is on of the best books out there, hands down. I urge you--read it! You will love it!

I know a book is good when it gives me nightmares!

This is the best suspense thriller I have read in a long time! Anne McLean Matthews is to be applauded! Once I started it I could not put it down. This book will take you inside a fascinating and revolting aspect of human violence--the serial killer. It certainly is not for the squeemish. The fact that Helen Myrer, who is ensnared by a serial killer, is a pscyhologist adds a very interesting dimension to the story. I highly recommend it

A doctor plays cat-and-mouse with a psycopath

Dr. Helen Myrer needs a bit of relaxation from her high pressure job as an employee of the State of New York. The widow decides to vacation at the same New Hampshire cabin that she once went to with her deceased spouse. Instead of the R & R she sought, Helen finds herself incarcerated by Kevin McCallum, the caretaker of the resort where Helen is staying. It does not take long for the psychologist to realize that she is not being held prisoner by a kidnapper. Instead she realizes that she must cope with a deranged and experienced serial killer, who enjoys physically and psychologically destroying his prey as part of his game. Just when you think you have escaped, he reappears to change the rules. Helen is left fighting for her life against a grandmaster killer. THE CAVE is a very good serial killer novel where the cat and mouse game adds a dimension of reasoning to a sub-genre that appears at times to be too sensational (though this book falls into that trap at times also). Helen's psychological analysis of her predator seems out of place when one is trying to survive. However Anne McLean Matthews book remains a tense thriller that fans of the sub-genre will enjoy.
