This is the story of Thomas Alcock's time in Alberta, Canada. Thomas was my grandfather, and as far as I know this story is completely true. The exact period of history that he was stationed there is not mentioned, but it was likely sometime in the 1950's. He uses the pen name "Signalman Willie Starr" but mentions it only once.
He was stationed near the Mackenzie river, and assigned the responsibility of sending and receiving messages in morse code. He dealt a lot with weather reports and the technology of the time. The book focuses more on his adventures and side quests as he fills his time in the north. If you enjoy Canadian history, you are sure to love his story.
