The Canticles of Spring

The Orkney poet George Mackay Brown described poetry as "the interrogation of silence." It is a profound statement for all its brevity. For me, that silence is the work of hidden springs which have been fed by direct personal experience and the emotions generated by love, friendship, grief, music, the natural world, landscape and the work of artists and creatives. The springs have also been fed by a growing alarm, anger and sense of impotence about the spread of war and conflict, growing social injustice and the pursuit of profit above the safety of our planet. I need a measure of silence in my life. Walking and working my allotment offer that space out of which, sometimes, words, phrases and images emerge which demand work and attention. Occasionally, when nothing is emerging from silence, I have chosen an idea or topic which fascinates me and I have "riffed" on the idea, developing it into a sequence of stanzas.. in previous volumes, Lock and Key and Glass. In this, my fourth book, Table and Weather take their turn. As ever, I would appreciate receiving your reactions and comments on these poems. If you like them enough, then tell your family and friends. I enjoy reading them to a live audience, in person or online, which is a fairly broad hint if you are interested
